A Colorado jury has convicted Ahmad Alissa on 10 counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of 10 people during a mass shooting at a Kings Soopers supermarket in Boulder on March 22, 2021. Alissa was also found guilty on multiple charges of attempted murder.
During the trial, Alissa’s defense team did not dispute that he was the shooter but argued that he was legally insane at the time of the attack, claiming he could not distinguish right from wrong. Despite these claims, the jury ruled that Alissa was legally sane at the time of the crime.
The case had experienced delays due to concerns over Alissa's mental competency, with him being diagnosed with schizophrenia after the attack. However, the jury’s decision determined that his mental health condition did not prevent him from being held responsible for the crime.
This verdict brings some closure after over two years of legal proceedings and debates regarding Alissa's mental state during the tragic event.
