China has announced a joint military exercise with Russia, set to take place in September. According to a statement released today by China's Ministry of Defense, the maneuver aims to "deepen strategic cooperation between the Chinese and Russian militaries." The exercise, named "North-Joint 2024," will involve naval and air forces from both countries and will be conducted in the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk, off the Russian coast.
The Chinese Defense Ministry also stated that the exercise is intended to enhance the countries' ability to "jointly address security threats." In addition to the main exercise, a joint naval patrol will be dispatched to "relevant sea areas of the Pacific Ocean." Furthermore, China is set to participate in Russia's strategic exercise, "Ocean 2024," which is scheduled to occur later this year.
China and Russia, long-standing allies, have strengthened their economic and diplomatic ties, particularly since the onset of Russia's war against Ukraine. In July, both nations held a joint military exercise in the waters and airspace near the port city of Zhanjiang, located in China's southern Guangdong province.
