Changpeng Zhao, commonly known as "CZ," is a Chinese-Canadian entrepreneur and the founder of Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. Born in Jiangsu, China, in 1977, Zhao and his family emigrated to Canada when he was a teenager. He later pursued his studies in computer science at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he developed a strong foundation in technology and programming.
Zhao's early career was rooted in the tech and finance sectors, initially working for the Tokyo Stock Exchange developing trading software, and later for Bloomberg, specializing in futures trading software. This experience gave him a deep understanding of financial systems and trading technologies.
Entering the cryptocurrency space in the early 2010s, Zhao worked at Blockchain.info as head of development and later as CTO at OKCoin. These roles deepened his knowledge of blockchain technology and the crypto industry.
In 2017, Zhao founded Binance, launching with an ICO that raised $15 million. Binance quickly became a top cryptocurrency exchange due to its wide asset support, low fees, and high-performance trading. Under his leadership, Binance expanded into derivatives with Binance Futures, introduced staking, and launched Binance Smart Chain (BSC) for dApps and smart contracts, which became a popular DeFi platform.
Despite Binance's success, regulatory challenges arose from 2020 onwards, leading to service restrictions in regions like the U.S., U.K., and Japan. Zhao, however, navigated these challenges, emphasizing Binance's commitment to regulatory compliance and user protection through initiatives like the SAFU fund.
By 2024, Binance had solidified its position in the crypto exchange space. Although no longer CEO, Zhao's influence on Binance's expansion into NFTs, DeFi, and navigating regulatory landscapes was profound. He also engaged in philanthropy through Binance Charity, using blockchain for transparent giving.
Changpeng Zhao's vision and leadership have significantly shaped Binance's success and the cryptocurrency landscape. His efforts in innovation, service expansion, and regulatory adaptation have left a lasting impact, establishing him as a pivotal figure in the blockchain and crypto industry.
