The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Brandenburg has confirmed that it will not pursue discussions with its former coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party (SPD). This decision indicates that the CDU, the center-right party associated with former Chancellor Angela Merkel, is set to function as the opposition in the eastern state.
CDU General Secretary Gordon Hoffmann stated, "For us, there is no government mandate. There is no majority for the SPD and CDU." He noted that while the CDU is open to participating in talks if invited, the current political landscape does not support a majority that includes the CDU. Hoffmann also emphasized that the party has ruled out forming a government with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).
Reflecting on the party's role moving forward, Hoffmann declared, "I don't see us in government, but our mandate from the voters is opposition, and we will fulfill it." The CDU's stance solidifies its position as it prepares for its responsibilities as the parliamentary opposition in Brandenburg.
