North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has expressed concerns over the Biden administration's strategy regarding Iran, calling for stronger measures in response to the conflict in Gaza. In an interview on Fox News Sunday, Burgum emphasized that the U.S. must apply "maximum pressure" on Iran, stating that the current administration’s efforts are ineffective.
Burgum’s comments come almost a year after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which he compared to the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. During a recent visit to Israel, Burgum met with the families of hostages held by Hamas. He argued that the $6 billion paid to Iran for the release of five American hostages only incentivized further hostage-taking.
The governor commended former President Donald Trump’s policies, claiming that Trump successfully limited Iran’s financial support for terrorist activities. When asked if recent sanctions imposed by the Biden administration were effective, Burgum dismissed them as a mere "talking point," asserting that they have not curbed Hamas’s budget or influence.
Burgum also suggested that a change in leadership, specifically the return of Trump, could lead to the release of hostages, comparing the situation to the release of hostages by Iran when Ronald Reagan became president in 1981.
