A building collapse in southern Italy's Naples province on Sunday claimed the lives of a mother, her 6-year-old son, and her 4-year-old daughter. The incident occurred following a suspected gas explosion. Local authorities reported that the father and their 2-year-old son were rescued and hospitalized, with the father in critical condition.
The collapse, which affected a two-story building, left rescuers working carefully to avoid further damage as they searched for survivors. A woman, believed to be the children's grandmother, is still missing, and hopes of finding her alive are diminishing as the search continues.
The explosion is believed to have originated on the building’s second floor, leading to the collapse and burying the lower floor under rubble. Local residents reported hearing a loud bang and witnessing a large dust cloud rising from the site.
Naples Mayor Vincenzo Simonelli described the building as "crumpled up on itself" and called the situation "very serious." Fire department officials are continuing their search and rescue efforts while ensuring the safety of those on the scene.
