Brazil's Supreme Court has lifted the freeze on the bank accounts of social media platform X and satellite internet provider Starlink following the payment of fines totaling over $3 million. The fines were imposed after X did not comply with court orders to remove accounts accused of spreading misinformation and failed to appoint a legal representative in Brazil, as required by law.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who had ordered the freeze, confirmed that the Brazilian government retrieved around $1.3 million from an X account and $1.9 million from a Starlink account. Once the full amount was paid, Justice de Moraes ordered the unfreezing of the companies' financial assets.
X and Starlink are both owned by Elon Musk. Following the settlement of the fines, the companies’ assets were restored, bringing the legal matter to a conclusion.
The court’s ruling comes after ongoing legal disputes regarding compliance with Brazilian regulations.
