The Supreme Court of Brazil has requested additional documentation from Elon Musk regarding the appointment of a legal representative for his social media platform, X. This follows a prior court order issued in August, which mandated that X appoint a lawyer in Brazil by a specific deadline. The platform was temporarily shut down due to non-compliance with this ruling.
Initially, Musk expressed resistance to the court's order but later announced that the company had appointed Rachel Conceicao as its legal representative. However, Judge Alexandre de Moraes has since requested further proof of her power of attorney and registration with the Chamber of Commerce of São Paulo, setting a five-day deadline for compliance.
The Supreme Court's earlier orders included the appointment of a legal representative and the payment of fines totaling 18.35 million reals (approximately $3.28 million). To secure these payments, the assets of X and Musk's satellite internet service, Starlink, have been frozen.
Brazilian law mandates that all internet companies maintain a legal representative within the country to handle legal notifications and actions. Tensions between Musk and Brazilian authorities have escalated due to X's failure to address issues related to hate speech, which Musk has criticized as censorship.
