US President Joe Biden is facing significant backlash after referring to supporters of Donald Trump as “garbage” during a virtual campaign call, just a week before the upcoming election. The remark was made during a Zoom call with the organization Voto Latino, where Biden addressed comments from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a recent Trump rally in New York.
Hinchcliffe, known for his work on the Kill Tony podcast, had sparked controversy by likening Puerto Rico to a “floating island of garbage” and making crude jokes about the Latino community. Biden, referencing this, remarked, “The only garbage I see floating out there is (Trump’s) supporters,” drawing criticism from both Republicans and some Democrats.
Trump distanced himself from Hinchcliffe’s comments, stating, “I don’t know him, someone put him up there. I don’t know who he is.” His running mate, JD Vance, condemned Biden's words, calling them “disgusting,” while urging Americans to reject such rhetoric.
Fox News contributor Joe Concha and podcast host Josh Holmes also weighed in, suggesting Biden’s comments were divisive, with Holmes remarking, “Outraged by a comedian, the President borrows the garbage label for half of America.” In response, a White House spokesperson clarified that Biden’s remark was directed at the comedian himself, not Trump’s supporters broadly.
