President Joe Biden described the death of Hezbollah’s longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah, as justice for his victims, while emphasizing the need for de-escalation in the Middle East. According to CNN, Biden stated that efforts are underway to reduce conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon through diplomatic channels.
“In Gaza, we are working towards a ceasefire and the release of hostages, while in Lebanon, we are negotiating a deal for people’s safe return to their homes in Israel and southern Lebanon,” Biden said.
The Israeli military confirmed that an airstrike in Lebanon on Friday killed Nasrallah, who led Hezbollah for over three decades. The strike also resulted in the death of Abbas Nilforushan, a general in Iran's Revolutionary Guard, according to Iranian sources. The Israeli Defense Forces stated, “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.”
In response, Iran condemned the attack, labeling it a “blatant war crime” and warned of potential escalation.
Nasrallah has led Hezbollah since 1992, overseeing hostilities with Israel and the group’s involvement in global terrorist activities. The U.S. designated Hezbollah as a foreign terrorist organization in 1997.
