President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris visited Sun Belt states on Wednesday to support recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene, aiming to prevent political backlash similar to Hurricane Katrina. The visits, coming weeks before Election Day, are crucial in battleground states.
Biden, after speaking with governors, met local officials in Greenville, South Carolina, and took an aerial tour in Raleigh, North Carolina. He highlighted bipartisan collaboration in the recovery and approved full federal funding for debris removal and emergency measures in North Carolina. Biden also plans visits to Georgia and Florida to continue relief efforts.
Harris, who canceled a trip to Pennsylvania, toured Augusta, Georgia, and announced federal assistance for local costs like food and shelter. The administration deployed 1,000 active-duty troops to assist in delivering supplies to isolated communities.
While facing some criticism, including from former President Trump regarding Harris’s delayed response, the White House defended the timing, citing security concerns. Biden reaffirmed the commitment to aid affected areas and urged Congress to approve additional disaster aid.
