At least six people have died on Japan’s Noto Peninsula due to flooding that occurred over the weekend. This area is still recovering from a magnitude-7.5 earthquake that struck on January 1. The recent rainfall exceeded 540 millimeters (21 inches) in Wajima over a 72-hour period, marking it as the heaviest continuous rainfall on record.
Of the reported fatalities, five individuals were found in Wajima and one in Suzu. Additionally, at least eight people are missing, including a 14-year-old girl. Floodwaters have impacted emergency housing established for those displaced by the earlier earthquake, which resulted in at least 374 fatalities.
The flooding caused approximately 4,000 households to lose power, and landslides have isolated over 100 areas. Military personnel have been dispatched to assist with rescue efforts, and authorities have advised tens of thousands of residents to evacuate.
In addition to the Noto Peninsula, heavy rain has also affected nearby prefectures, raising concerns about further flooding and leading to the suspension of train services in those regions.
