Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been sworn in as the president of Sri Lanka after winning the election on Saturday. The inauguration occurred early Monday at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo. Dissanayake, who leads the People’s Liberation Front (JVP) and the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, received 42.31 percent of the votes, according to the Election Commission.
In his inaugural address, Dissanayake acknowledged the challenges facing the country and expressed a commitment to restoring public confidence in the political system. He emphasized the importance of public support in addressing national issues.
This election follows the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, which occurred amid mass protests related to an economic crisis in 2022. The situation has since stabilized with assistance from the International Monetary Fund, although austerity measures have affected many citizens.
Dissanayake's campaign focused on addressing corruption and political reform. Historically, the JVP was known for its revolutionary activities but has shifted to support an open economy and a more flexible approach to privatization in recent years.
