Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Maryland, is under examination for allegedly receiving tax breaks for which she did not qualify. This has reportedly enabled her to save nearly $14,000 in taxes on her properties located in Washington, D.C., and Maryland between 2005 and 2017.
Records reviewed indicate that Alsobrooks claimed a homestead tax exemption on her Washington property, which is designed for primary residents, lower-income individuals, and senior citizens. However, public documents reveal that Alsobrooks has been registered to vote in Prince George’s County, Maryland, since 1995, suggesting that she does not primarily reside in D.C. Currently, she serves as the county executive in Prince George’s County, overseeing its budget and tax collection.
In addition to the homestead exemption, Alsobrooks received a tax break meant for low-income senior citizens on her Washington residence, effectively halving her tax bill. At 53 years old, she does not meet the age requirement for this exemption, although it appears her grandparents, who previously owned the property, might have qualified.
Alsobrooks' senior adviser stated that she was unaware of the tax issues and is working with local authorities to resolve them. Connor Lounsbury, the adviser, noted that Alsobrooks began paying the mortgage on her grandmother’s home when she moved out until its sale in 2018, claiming she was not informed about the tax credits tied to that property.
In Maryland, Alsobrooks purchased a property in 2005 and received a homestead exemption in 2008 for a townhouse she later rented out, yet continued to claim the primary resident exemption, which CNN estimates saved her at least $2,600.
Her campaign indicated that another home in Prince George’s County is her primary residence, but she does not receive a homestead exemption for it. Lounsbury explained that the homestead tax credit from her previous home was not transferred, resulting in no financial benefit for Alsobrooks, who ended up paying more in taxes.
As Alsobrooks competes against former Republican Governor Larry Hogan for the open Senate seat vacated by outgoing Senator Ben Cardin, recent polling from Gonzales Research and Media Services shows her leading Hogan by 5 points, with 46% support compared to Hogan's 41%. Hogan is positioning himself as an anti-Trump Republican, while Democrats aim to portray him as a “Never Trumper.” Alsobrooks has accused Hogan of enabling MAGA Republicans and potentially granting them control of the Senate.
