Adm. Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations, was successfully treated for breast cancer in July, as announced by the Navy. Diagnosed in late June following a routine mammogram, she underwent a lumpectomy with sentinel node biopsy at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in July and completed radiotherapy in August.
During her surgery, which required less than 90 minutes of general anesthesia, Franchetti temporarily transferred her authority to Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. James Kilby. She communicated her absence to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and other key officials in advance of her surgery.
In her statement, Franchetti expressed gratitude for her medical team at the John P. Murtha Cancer Center, highlighting the importance of early detection and routine screening.
The article also noted past comparisons to Secretary Austin's health issues, as he experienced a cancer diagnosis in December 2023, followed by hospitalization and a delayed notification to key government officials. Austin has since discussed his experience with cancer, emphasizing the importance of sharing information and learning from past circumstances.
