Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe stated that the July assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was a “mission failure” for the agency tasked with his protection. During a briefing about the agency’s mission assurance investigation, Rowe emphasized the importance of accountability in response to the events of July 13.
Rowe indicated that the incident highlighted the need for a “shift in paradigm” in the Secret Service’s protective operations. The assassination attempt, which occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulted in Trump sustaining a gunshot wound to the ear, while an attendee, Corey Comperatore, was fatally shot.
The agency is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident to identify lessons learned and prevent similar failures in the future. The focus is on improving strategies to enhance the safety of individuals under their protection.
